Senior Photos: Abby

Abby is the youngest of my (J.P.’s) first cousins, making her the baby. As a result, I have a picture of her in my head that looks something like this:

Yup, I took this one, too. *sigh*

(Sorry, Abby!)

But now she’s away at college, which doesn’t make me feel old at all, nooo… Furthermore, this is her now:

Kids grow up. If you’re really lucky, though, they grow up like Abby: beautiful inside and out. Not to say I don’t miss the gap-toothed little girl from time to time, but I’m delighted by the caring, intelligent, and sweet young lady she’s become. (Excuse me…something in my eye…)

Anyway, even though we took these after graduation, we’re going to count them as senior photos because she hadn’t left for school yet and besides, it’s our blog, so what are you going to do about it? *Ahem* Also, if you’ve got a senior in your house for whom you’d like to get photos, the time to contact us is now. It’s actually cool out and you can get photos made before the college application process has left them looking world-weary and haggard.

It’s been amazing to watch Abby grow up and into a wonderful aunt to her nieces, who adore her.

We love you, Abby! Now go kick college’s butt!

Senior Photos: Vivien

Let me introduce Vivien.

Vivien has been a friend of ours for many years. When she was little, Wendy taught her ballet, and she was the flower girl at our wedding. (She did a great job, by the way.) While Vivien isn’t technically a senior, when you’re as lovely as she is any time is a good one for a portrait session and besides, “not-quite-senior-photos” doesn’t really have a ring to it.

It’s tempting to tell you that Vivien is a dancer, and a fantastic one at that but, frankly, if you can’t figure that out from the photos, then no amount of text is going to help you.

It’s much harder to get across in a photo how sweet Vivien is, but I think Wendy did a pretty terrific job with this next one.

For these photos, Wendy and I hung out with Vivien at 701 Whaley and basically made her jump, and jump, and jump, and occasionally lounge in a window. (Even dancers deserve a break.)

We might have asked her to just twirl a little bit, too.

Vivien is well on her way to achieving her goal of dancing professionally for the New York City Ballet. While Wendy chose not to pursue dance professionally, I think the grace and discipline that her studies engendered radiate in everything she does. Don’t think, though, that just the ladies can have grace, poise, and athleticism. When testing light, I’m willing to show off my moves, too…

My form would be better, but my tights were at the cleaners.

The summer is flying by, and if you’re ready to have your senior photos made, drop us a line by clicking here or call us at 803.386.9197 to arrange a free consultation.

Senior Photos: Anna

It’s a lot of fun when our photographic and non-photographic interests come together in a single shoot. That’s why I keep writing to Krispy Kreme offering my services. And while they have yet to return my calls, we did have the opportunity to photograph Anna’s senior portraits in December. See, Anna is a dancer as is my lovely wife Wendy. She studied classical ballet for many years and, if you’ve met her, you’ve probably noticed her grace and poise while wondering how she wound up with a guy who clearly likes Krispy Kreme doughnuts as much as I do.

Anna, though, has the grace of a dancer and, like Wendy, pairs it with beauty and a sweet spirit. We think it comes through in her photos which we took at Columbia’s 701 Whaley.

After taking some more traditional senior shots, Anna changed clothes and showed us some of her moves.

It’s fun telling someone “Jump!” over and over again while clicking a shutter button.

If you enjoyed these, feel free to check out some more senior photos or, if you’d like to book a session, senior or otherwise, drop us a line.

Senior Photos: Rebekah

Seniors have been woefully underrepresented on the blog, and so, before getting back into our usual wedding-heavy rotation, I thought we’d include a few from Rebekah’s shoot last spring.

At that time, Rebekah was one of my students. It would be pretty well impossible to capture Rebekah’s awesomeness in a few words on a blog. Let’s just say she was instrumental in the Snuggie incident and leave it at that.

Rebecca in a field of tiny yellow flowers. (No, botany isn't really my forte.)

Rebekah loves to read, which, as someone who taught English for years, has a special appeal to me.  I liked the idea of this girl who loves to read, but also loves the outdoors, so even when the sun has gone down she hunkers down by a window with her book, unable to let go of the story despite the faded light. Rebekah was nice enough to play along.

It’s tough to believe Rebekah has already finished her first semester of college. (She’s doing fantastically, by the way.) It’s a good reminder, though, that time moves quickly, so you’d better hurry and read those good books while you can!

Senior Photos: Christy

Given that Wendy and I are both high school teachers, it’ might seem a little odd that we’d never done any senior photos before now. Maybe it’s because, for me, senior portraits always conjured up images of heading down to Olan Mills, putting on a dickie and tuxedo jacket several dozen guys had worn before me then tilting my head at an uncomfortable angle while trying to look natural.

That was not for us.

We decided that if we were going to take senior photos, we were going to make images that our clients could actually get excited about. We were going to make images that we could get excited about. As such, Christy was a wonderful first subject.

Apart from her other wonderful qualities, Christy has an awesome sense of style. It’s a good thing, because she’s looking at studying fashion marketing in college. Taking that into account, it only made sense to take her shoot in a fashion-y direction. I even asked her to practice making the faces that models do in fashion ads. I think she pulled it off magnificently!

So that’s senior session #1 from Lumos Studio. If you’re getting ready to be a senior and want something that’s a little more you than a black wrap and a canned smile drop us a line at info@lumosstudio.com and set up your session for this summer before your hair turns gray from filling out college and scholarship applications.
